CHRIST and Circumcision: The Spiritual Significance.

Hello everyone.

So I’ve been doing a personal bible study journal and it’s been awesome. I was reading Romans 4,when I stormed on the word Circumcision. I couldn’t go forward without getting to understand what Apostle Paul was talking about. I prayed and the Holy Spirit led me. I did some research and added up. Be blessed.

Circumcision is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out worldwide. Here, the foreskin is removed from the penis with a scalpel; the foreskin is like an outer covering. It’s actually considered by medical associations to significant for males in the prevention of HIV.

The Jewish basis for circumcision is found in the Bible (Gen 17:10-14) “This is my covenant which year shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; every man child among you shall be circumcised…. ” This was the starting point, here it signifies the covenant between God and Abraham, God and the Jews.

In Deutronomy10, the Israelites were about to receive a new copy of the Law, having rebelled against the Lord (thinking because they had that “standing” with God) Moses admonished them to “circumcise” their hearts, that the physical mark of circumcision notwithstanding, they were to manifest spiritual commitment to and obedience to God’s will.
The prophet Jeremiah made the same demands of what the Lord required of them in (4:4) though they did the opposite. For him, circumcision entailed consecrating one’s self to the Lord, to the high moral ideals of the covenant and living holy (Lev 11:44). Also that true members of the covenant are motivated by love for God (Deu 6:5) and one’s neighbor (Lev 19:18)
Jesus Christ came with the good news of salvation; not by works but by Faith in believing in Him as the son of God, and Saviour (Jn 3:16). This raised some questions like whether circumcision is no longer vital for the Jews (and gentiles). Christians who came from Jewish backgrounds felt that gentiles should become Jews by circumcision before being able to experience Christ’s saving work [since Christ (Lk 2:21), John the Baptist (Lk 1:59), and Saul (Phil 3:5) were circumcised.]
Even though these Jews saw the prophecies of Ezekiel and Joel being fulfilled [ Ezk 36:25-27, Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17] and they were amazed as to how these uncircumcised gentiles were receiving God’s outpouring of the Holy Ghost (Acts 10:44-48) yet some insisted that circumcision was a necessity for salvation, they carried the matter up, went as far as proclaiming it(Acts 15:15). Apostle Paul opposed that the gentiles shouldn’t be compelled to be circumcised (Gal 2:3); that it’s our faith in God through Christ Jesus that’s credited to us as righteousness not any good works or physical mark (Rom 4:5,6).

My point here is circumcision isn’t just the physical mark but it’s importance is in having a right standing and relationship with God through Christ Jesus, who enables us by Grace to live holy lives and obey God’s will. God gave Abraham a covenant of many generations and countless blessings because he believed, loved God and was in a right relationship with God (Gen 17:1-7) He then passed it down to his descendants and the circumcision was a mark and form of responsibility (which I feel was for them to remember to serve and love God just as Abraham did).

The spiritual significance of circumcision has been achieved by divine Grace without the performance of the physical rite, circumcision is a form of spiritual responsibility to believe in God through Christ who has paid physically (no need for physical mark again), serve Him, obey His will and have a right relationship with Him like Father Abraham and Jesus.
