Harmattan has graced us with its presence…
This “August visitor” is a dry breeze associated with dust the blows over the West African subcontinent. Along with this season comes a certain coarse or rough feeling of the skin, dryness of the lips that can often lead to peeling, easy laundry activities due to the dry wind and DUST! DUST! DUST!
It also lowers the humidity, dissipates cloud cover, prevents rainfall formation, wide fluctuations in the ambient temperatures of the day and night and sometimes creates big clouds of dust which can result in duststorms or sandstorms, etc or better still just ask wiki
This particular season requires adequate care and consciousness which is why I’d be sharing tips on how we can embrace this visitor with no fears.
Use warm water for bathing.
Early mornings come with cold temperatures due to the early wind breeze form the seas, and a warm bath before heading out would make your body temperature moderate and prevent you from catching a cold. Make sure the water temperature is warm and not hot!
Use oils and moisturizers
Due to the effect of the dry wind on the skin, moisturizers are needed to keep the skin moist and smooth. Oils assists by making the skin glow. Good oils like coconut oil and palm kernel oil can be used during this period. Apply these at least twice daily to secure your skin. Hand creams are advised to be carried about in our bags.
Our lips aren’t left out in the war against dryness. There are protective lip balms that keep our lips moist these should be applied, and also to keep ourselves away from germs brought in by the dust hand sanitizer are needed especially when we’re on the go!
This is a time to air out your clothes, and wears especially the ones that have been laid up in boxes and bags for so long. It’s also a good time to wash because the dry wind and hot sun assist in getting the clothes ready. Also when drying out the clothes in the sun, don’t leave them out for long and use a clothe peg or clip to hold the clothes steadfast to the rope or hangers to avoid them flying away.
Drink lots of water
Due to its low humidity, there’s this itchy sensation that goes down the throat line. It’s adviced to take water to prevent dehydration. Be creative: introduce cucumbers or apples into a glass of water this has an nutritious advantage. During this period, some watering holes and rivers dry up, so store up water in good as clean storage cans to prevent shortage.
Recently, in my area there has been this outbreak of black soothe everywhere, even in someone’s nose 😕 that’s why it’s important to clean every corner of your space because dirt and cobweb can hide anywhere. I recently observed cobwebs beneath my cupboard and I screamed. Your windows, kitchen counters and cabinets, toilet and bathrooms deserve all the love they can get this period.
Use disinfectants while cleaning; this also helps you maintain a good hygiene. Also don’t leave your windows open regularly. I open my windows in the morning and close them in the late afternoons to avoid dust.
