#TrendAlert Leather Trend in Cabinetry

KBIS this year featured multiple manufacturers who showcased their leather applications within their cabinetry as a new option for clients.  Syndicated columnist Debbie Travis noted that ” …leather is a handsome and durable material that transcends trends. However, over the last decade its popularity has expanded from the familiar and tactile den sofa and office chair to include floor tiles, countertops, furniture, wall panels and cabinets, all using recycled leather products” in her yearly review of trends published in January.   KBIS this year proved this trend with exhibitors embracing leather and Formica launching dECOLeather – a recycled leather veneer – at KBIS.  Formica featured a Coastal Buffalo wall in a media room unit and advertised the uses of dECOLeather in cabinetry.

Elkay showcased the versatility of leather by integrating leather panels and shelves in two displays – one modern and one more traditional.  Elkay used Mahogany Buffalo dECOLeather, custom stitched and panelized by EcoDomo.   Many visitors felt compelled to touch and feel the leather when seeing the space !

Elkay also featured a modern TV feature wall/ media unit which was done with Antique Grey Crocodile dECOLeather used as back panel and as shelving.  The Crocodile imprint was sequence matched throughout the piece.

MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. featured leather in its Omega line with a black leather floor by EcoDomo and a custom ebony shagreen dECOLeather by Formica integrated in modern aluminum doors and parts of the counter.  Note that this picture was taken on the third day of the show after tens of thousands of people walked on the leather floor. Yes, leather floors can be used in kitchens !A detail shot showcases the appeal of the Formica dECOLeather within cabinetry.

The Formica dECOLeather was also integrated beautifully in drawer bottoms to complement the design of the modern cabinet.  Everyone raved about this display.

MasterBrand also had a countertop in leather in another area of their showroom.  The countertop was fabricated with Grey Thunder dECOLeather from Formica.

Fabuwood from New Jersey featured a quintessential mix of wood and leather in cabinetry.  Their luxurious china cabinet had glass shelves which allowed for light to come through and illuminate the Mahogany Crocodile dECOLeather.

Northern Contours introduced leather doors at KBIS for cabinetry.  Made with dECOLeather, the doors are made with matching or contrasting edge banding.

Northern Contours also had a vanity wall display made with a gold stitched dECOLeather panel.  They used the ivory-colored Pearl White Buffalo recycled leather veneer.  Note that the stitching and fabrication was done by EcoDomo.

Hafele featured full hide leather applications as a way to create an upscale environment to showcase its hardware options.   EcoDomo worked in partnership with Hafele to develop a unique closet island featuring a Nigrine black color leather countertop as well as drawer panels made with distinctive re-purposed belt panels from the Phoenix Collection.  EcoDomo manufacturers leather countertops often used in closets and offices. The Hafele drawers were exceptionally wide yet stable enough to open and close with ease.   The leather belts were bookmatched across the piece. Hafele also showcased its sliding door hardware with a barn door featuring upholstered EcoDomo Cordova Shagreen hide leather panels.  The combination of wood and leather offers a timeless touch of elegance.

There were several other exhibitors featuring leather in their displays for which we don’t have pictures.   In addition, Kraft Maid,  Wood Mode, California Closets, and Christiana Cabinetry already offer leather options in their finishes. The comments collected from each manufacturer was that the response to integration of leather in cabinetry was exceptional.  People were intrigued, fascinated, and awed by the combination of materials on display with leather.   They loved the design and esthetics of the product.    Watch out for this trend growing at KBIS next year !
